About Humanin
Humanin is a short peptide encoded by an open reading frame within the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA gene. It was identified in 2001 in a functional screen for factors that protect neuronal cells from amyloid-related insults, and it was the first member of what is now called the mitochondrial-derived peptide family, which also includes MOTS-c.
The native peptide has 24 amino acids. Synthetic analogues are also used, notably the more potent S14G variant (HNG), so the sequence should be confirmed for each lot.
