About Follistatin-344
Follistatin is a secreted glycoprotein that binds members of the TGF-β superfamily, most notably activins and myostatin (GDF-8), and prevents them from engaging their receptors. Alternative splicing produces two main precursors, FST-344 and FST-317, which are processed into mature forms of 315 and 288 amino acids.
The 344 designation refers to the longer precursor, whose mature form (FS-315) circulates in blood. Follistatin was first isolated from ovarian follicular fluid as an inhibitor of follicle-stimulating hormone release, which gave it its name.
